Draw a triangle on this map, with the corners being the north pole, Sydney, and Johannesburg. We know the distances from the north pole to Sydney and the north pole to Johannesburg. Knowing the lengths of 2 sides of the triangle plus the angle between them, we can us simple trigonometry to calculate the distance between Sydney and Johannesburg. Now it would make absolutely no sense for airlines to take anything but as close as a direct flight as possible to save on fuel. That direct path leads over the Himalayas.
