The world isn't improving, sorry, but you're sheltered. Theres more violence out there then ever, people are losing limbs, their homes, their families - hundreds of millions of people are struggling just to survive... Our population is being driven up more than the Earth can handle, and now theres a global recession on our hands.
Its not about optimism or pessimism, its about looking at the facts -- the truth, and not denying that theres a possibility everything as we know it could end. You can't believe the world is improving, you have to improve it yourself -- believing does nothing for the world.
How is this whole thread even remotely scientific btw? Who cares if the world blows up in 2012, we won't have time to figure out how they predicted this so well anyways... if something of that magnitude is going to happen, then why worry about it. We can't stop it anyways, and if it doesn't happen then good for us -- but either way, theres absolutely no point in discussing a topic like this.
The world IS improving. Famine is decreasing, the number of people living under 1 dollar a week is decreasing, seriously, look at the facts before saying this. I suggest you read
The Improving State of the World: Why We're Living Longer, Healthier, More Comfortable Lives On a Cleaner Planet by Indur Goklany. It'll explain that things aren't that bad.
Of course, there's always room for improvement. Being pessimistic is easy. If you don't have expectactions of life, you don't have setbacks over what is going to happen. Being optimist is wat requires effort and what improves the world.
