national parks are super NOT OK. they have special restrictions because many date back to a historical time and contain sites and buildings that have historical value. Most, if not all, have legal restrictions and you're likely looking at more than a "please leave", more likely an arrest and/or confiscation. State parks are often the same.

County parks and city parks however are generally fair game unless they city or county's website explicitly prohibits metal detecting and/or digging of any kind.

I would start by doing a bit of research on the parks in your area, both to see if its legal to hunt there and also to check how old they may be. type in "historic mapworks" on google and you'll find a website with centuries of historical maps to help you date the parks.

Also google "friendly metal detecting forum", its a wonderful community.

going out of populated areas will cut down on finding anything at all by a lot and really really removes the possibility of finding anything cool.

it really just depends on what you want to find. town areas you sift through junk hoping for a ring or something, but you can also simply look for historical items if you want to comb through the history of your area.

at some point your backyard was the apex of exploration so if you can find any data that tells of old settlements, forts, battles, and such you can avoid too much trash and find interesting things in areas that are still nature filled.
