that second picture in wikipedia flew over my head
o lol ya, that is explaining the "base" part of the base 20 system.
for a base 10 system you start to repeat the numbers 0-9 after you count to the base of 10. Example: 7,8,9,10. See it pushes to 2 digits, then after 19 comes 20. again a base of 10.
In the mayan system the base stack doesn't take place until 20.
So if we take the number 33 for example, in our base 10 system that is essentially saying you have 3 "10's" and 3 "1's". But in a base 20 system you would have 1 "20" and 13 "1's"
if that makes sense.
Another way to think of it is symbolically, we in a base 10 system have a distinct "symbol" for each number 0-9, then it repeats. Mayans had a distinct "symbol" for each number 0-19. So the symbols don't repeat until the bast of 20.
Trippy to think that this was used for some high level math and astrology isnt it? not to mention a calendar far more accurate than the European one!
