A lot of things mentioned already exist... Motion/ infrared sensors, home automation with most your electrical (receptacles, switches, motor controlled blinds, etc). These can also be controlled via app on tablets. Anyone really interested could start with Lutron and Leviton home automation.

yes, everything here exist, but that does mean the market potential is large. setting it all together and install it for the average joe is currently not(to my knowledge) a big market around.

Your typical motion and infrared sensors are common enough though for consumers. At around $20-30 a pop, they wire as simply as a toggle switch. I sell them all day. Wireless controls aren't much different, though a little less common. Useful for fans in vaulted ceilings, etc.
When considering full home automation, no homeowner will do it because of the scale. It's typically the type of thing done during new home construction because of the control panels and extensive wiring. And anyone who can afford itbto begin with has no issue paying a professional.

Having a fridge that tells you when you run out of food products. That would be awesome.

the problem is that there exists many such things. But there is no common interface, no language all the devices speak as far as i know of.

for example - you have the light bulps that you can wirelessly control. However you need:
a sender who can send a specific frequency. a language those ligthbulbs speak - including many factureres differences. a userinterface where you can turn those on, set scenarios (like moods or dinner or watching tv or whatever) and then you need a way to connect these scenarios to such things as the blends, your oven your music player and your radiator.
Which have all the same problems again.
