so they should just all quit trying to progress our understanding of things because some test end in failure?

trial and error testing is necessary and if you think otherwise you truly don't understand anything.

i'd much rather see someone trying to cure cancer and having people die in the testing than to see no one trying to cure cancer.

Why do we even care about whether roaches feel pain when studying them can lead to real benefits for humans?

Good, good, this kind of thinking has brought us pollution, global warming, nuclear power stations which led to entire regions being irradiated with people forced to live in it, entire animal species extinct etc... all for the 'benefit' of humans. I say we continue our trials and errors until we completely fuck up just about everything that exists on earth.
