Good read. I doubt a virus from millions of years ago will find us suitable. A few thousand to tens of thousands maybe. I lean more to the idea that we unleashe an unknown pathogen that harbingers the doom of all or most aquatic life thus plunging the earth into a destructive downward spiral of doom as the vast oceans begin to spoil and rot. Mmm. Looking forward to it.

Edit: or a government gets a hold of a dangerous pathogen and engineers it into a new weapon.

There are bacteria similar to this and they deprive oxygen from the environment they are in. If unchecked they can spread all over and kill the ocean and then go airborne.
