I'm not sure if your opinion counts, since theres a high chance that you might be under the effect of illegal substances.

(opinion and theory) mostly concerning nightmares but also all dreams, dreaming is part of our survival mechanism. dreams expose us to extremes that better prepare us to deal with them in the real world. successful dreamers are better equipped to face danger. Thus dreamers are better survivors and better reproducers. thus the ability to dream has been a trait of strength that gets passed to the next generation. I'd imagine there is some genetics involved. This also may be why children have nightmares about animals or monsters attacking them. Those childhood dreams may be an inherited trait of times past where being attacked by animals was a very real and constant threat. This would also explain why we have bad dreams about stuff we are worried about or afraid of; its our brain trying to prepare us for what might come.
