this is one of the very rare cases where dark matter really is 'just a theory' at this point. adding it into our models fixes a handful of problems but we havnt even come close to confirming it

ok let me rephrase.

there is a gravitational effect regarding the bending of light around galaxies (one way to observe it) that is more that predicted, and that mass difference between the galaxies theoretical mass and real mass is called dark matter.
