I just did a bit of research and apparently it's supposed to be around 26 million years, but NASA says its very difficult to tell where we are in relation to the plane.
When looking at the sky from africa, the milky way appears to be fairly centered, though our point of view of it changes fairly often due to our perspective in orbit around the sun.
Definitely interesting, I'm gonna keep doing more research on this topic because no one seems to be giving straight answers. There must be a way to judge where the actual paper thin part of the ecliptic is and where our solar system is located in relation to it, you'd think NASA of all people would have been able to figure that out.

As mentioned earlier, the Sun never crosses the "Galactic Equator", but will cross the Galactic Plane in about 30 million years.
You should read the whole site while you're at it.
