interesting stuff.

True this. The solar maximum of 2012 is supposed to be pretty bad x.x

Article: Comet Dive-Bombs Sun During Large Solar Eruption

"A comet plunged into the sun this week just as a huge eruption exploded from the star's surface, but the two events are likely not related, NASA scientists say..." (Continued in Article)

Comets hitting the sun aren't a super rare occurance, but this is interesting to have seen it caught on camera so vividly.

According to recent models, Solar Cycle 24 will be deadly, not only because our "Shields" will be down, but also because of the sheer amount & mass of the flares.

peak is 2013 not 2012.

edit: should say no on e really can say when the peak is, this has been a longer than usual trough.

Large Solar Storm going on right now.

KP: 6

Solar wind speed hasn't increased much, so I think it will calm down soon. The sun is getting VERY active as opposed to the previous dormant years though.

Solar Cycle 24 is definitely ramping up fast.

Article: Another Comet Dive Bombs the Sun

http://www.space.com/11838-photo-comet-plunges-sun-solar-storm.html

Article: "A sun-watching spacecraft has recorded views of an ill-fated comet plunging into the sun just after a huge solar eruption — the second time in 10 days that a comet dive-bombed Earth's star during a solar storm."

Nice

Massive CME explodes

http://www.space.com/11893-huge-sun-eruption-spectacular-solar-flare.html

"The sun unleashed a massive solar storm today (June 7) in a dazzling eruption that kicked up a vast cloud of magnetic plasma that appeared to rain back down over half of the sun's entire surface, NASA scientists say.
The solar storm hit its peak at about 2:41 a.m. EDT (0641 GMT), but the actual flare extended over a three-hour period, said C. Alex Young, a solar astrophysicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center who runs a website called The Sun Today, in a video describing the event.
"The sun produced a quite spectacular prominence eruption that had a solar flare and high-energy particles associated with it, but I've just never seen material released like this before," Young said. "It looks like somebody just kicked a giant clod of dirt into the air and then it fell back down."

Nice Flare :)

I work in the Electric Generation Industry, and in 1986 a Large Solar Flare actually during that Solar Max overloaded Quebec's Power Grid and Caused a Blackout. This was due to a large voltage spike triggering Relay protection, and did not do any significant Damage. But it shows how technology is vulnerable to disturbances from these types of events.
