lol'd i don't plan on hiking in the ghetto,

thanks for the tips and info guys

A gun's not a bad idea for scaring off bears if there are any where you're hiking. Don't shoot the bear, though, that'll just piss it off.

look up some statistics on how many people disappear on trails and shit and you will gladly take a gun.

past few decades has shown it getting worse.

First time hiker here, only been on small trails, no overnights, want to try overnight camping and wanted to know if any experienced hikers have any tips on gear/places to hike near me. (new jersey)

The only tip I'll give you is that your raincoat should be at the very top of all your gear incase it rains. At least you won't go fiddling around trying to find it while you get drenched.

Water is good. Water purification tabs and means to boil water should be considered.

Tuna/sardines in olive oil. Something nutritious, with high fat content that can help sustain you for hours at a time.

NJ this time of year...

A quart of charcoal lighter fluid, toilet paper, lighter and wax(candles, block of wax etc.). Magnesium fire starter if you used one before or will practice using one beforehand.

OD army jacket with liner or similar, plastic pocket poncho and plenty of extra socks.

A fiberglass handled shovel. Use it as a walking stick, clear snow from an area to build fires/set tent.

Some rope, knife, tent etc... the basic stuff.

Boy Scout handbook.

In that area if you have a cell phone with a GSP/Map app, take it for emergencies but turn it off. Map and compass as well if you can use them.

A camera! Journal and something to write with. If you are going to go through this, especially in the winter you will want to document it. :D

Oh yea a hatchet, Hammer+Axe.

I probably missed a few minor things but look in the BS handbook first, for extra info and you will be ok. ;)

ehh I've never really hiked, but here's some common sense stuff anyway.

Make sure you tell someone where you're going and when you expect to be back. In case you do get lost/injured you can get rescue.

Have fun!
