I was aware well before the movie.

The movie just made it even more annoying because hollywood was going to try to profit off retarded superstitions

Their attempted viral marketing tactics also annoyed the shit out of me. A sign that said nothing more than, "google: 2012".

This happens every year... it's just that this time... this happened into a human civilised area.
So the media decided that this year would be the year that they would make people panic about this because 2012 is coming maybe...
or they just didn't have anything interesting to say (which happens often).
