well the problem would be lets say the race we found didn't use sight or hearing as a means of sense and instead used something like sonar and telepathy. wtf would we do then lol.

Sonar displace depth so gesture can still be used.

Telepathy would allow them to understand us either way though not allow us to
understand them... with that being said its better then nothing.
