My english class actually had a discussion on this (it's a sci-fi lit class) and we decided that the discovery channel took it out of context and tried to make it more controversial that he meant it to be because we also watched his TED video talking about the same subject and in the TED video stated that since the universe is so vast it's possible that aliens exist but it is unlikely that they are within (he gave a number but i don't remember) lightyears away from us or else they would have made contact with us by now
same thing where he said first contact is more likely to be with a machine than a species right?
