have you tried closing any background programs that are not in use and disabling your firewall in case the net connection is being blocked? if you have a router it may have a firewall that may need to be disabled or bypassed too. if your router doesn't allow you to turn off the firewall sometimes they let you assign your computers ip address to a dmz. just a thought.

stolen ipod

i had one sold to me most likely stolen bought for 5$ tried for a while restoring it no luck but apple has the serial numbers in the system and can see who bought it
if u find a fix for it pm me and ill try to help with it if not

have you tried doing a manual firmware upgrade instead of the automatic one? instructions are here:
