When the moon enters its phases (new/cresent/half/ect)
the earth is between it and the sun blocking direct sunlightto make the celecstial phenominom occur.
When the moon is between the directly earth and sun you have whats known as a "solar eclipse"
When the earth is "directly" between the sun and moon you have whats known as a "lunar eclipse"
As for being able to see the rest of the moon even though it's not illuminated by direct sunlight: Your not tripping or filling in the blanks with your mind, you can see it

the earth is not in between the moon and sun during new moon, only full moon. what you are describing is a lunar eclipse which
only happens at full moon.

You can see new moon, too.
a 100% new moon is not visible from earth. and its out during the day
no matter where you are in the world. This post was edited by juliusjuice on Jan 26 2010 06:11pm
