The magnetic pole has shifted before and is happening slowly right now, but it doesn't cause disasters.. you probably wouldn't even notice it unless you were looking at a compass.
Thanks, Wikipedia, but you're still not correct.
It is not known whether the actual reversal (as opposed to progressive shift) is progressive, or whether it happens instaneously or first cuts out and then reappears.
If at some point it cuts out there will be problems.
