Not a "health guy", but hopefully some of my info can help.
Losing fat you should be worrying about cardiovascular exercise. Figure out your target heart rate and when jogging try to keep your heart rate on that sweet spot. If it goes too low you need to work a bit more, if too high then you need to take it back a few notches. Make sure you have proper shoes when running, it is very important that you have the support you need, without it you might start developing injuries. And remember, you need to set a few days a week for anaerobic exercise. A muscular body burns more calories than a body with less muscle mass.
As far as food, calories in is what should be main concern. One thing about eating is you can live a sedentary lifestyle, but if you eat properly you will get thinner. Now if you eat nothing but junk food but workout like a mad man, there is a strong chance you will not get thinner.
Do not try to avoid carbs. Carbohydrates is what your body uses as fuel through out the day. Before major marathons, the event usually has a pre-run dinner with nothing but pastas and breads. Now depending on your situation, you need to figure out how much carbs you need per day. There are different ratios for fat, carbs, and protein intake for different goals. Even salts, fats, and sugar are all things you need to be consuming, it's just usually being consumed in excess. But try to cut down on sodium(salt), and sugars.
Within the ratios is where you start developing what to eat. Always best to cook your own meals, because you can portion it out yourself and you know exactly what is going into it. Some people think going to a restaurant or fast food chain and ordering the salad or chicken sandwich is healthy. No way. Salad is great but the dressing destroys it, the buns, fatty chicken pieces like thigh, and sauces also mess up the meal.
You want to eat around 5-6 meals a day. Eating many times throughout the day helps in keeping your metabolism at a strong constant level. Obviously the portions are much smaller but think of it as your usually 3 meals for the day rationed out into 6 different meals. I usually grill a pack of chicken breast, steam some broccoli, and steam brown rice on a weekend. Put them into individual containers and through out the week just take a few to work with me.

I don't know, I'm sure there is someone on this board that can give you some better advise, this is stuff I just read on google and stuff. Good luck man, I know when I decided to lose some weight it took a change in lifestyle.
