Forces acting on planets aren't all perpendicular to its axis of rotation, which generates angular velocity.

Planets all have forces acting on them.. Space debris, gravitational forces from moons, etc

Our moon slows down the earth's rotation.

If the planet is not already rotating (supposing at one point they did not rotate), then there is no axis of rotation to generate angular velocity... Its a different story once they've already started rotating, then you're right - any forces that are not perpendicular to its axis of rotation will affect its angular velocity, but thats not what I'm talking about.

I'm taking an astronomy class in college and I'm loving it and I find it very interesting.

We're pretty deep into the course now, but strangely enough, we never came across this question.

Why do planets rotate? I know they revolve around the sun because of gravity, but why do they rotate? and why do they rotate a certain direction?

I tried googling for some answers, but I was still not very clear on the reason other than the fact that it has to do with physics..

Not all planets rotate.

Well its like this, the force of expansion (aka the big bang, and Darkmatter domination) causes us to move Outwards... and then gravity tries to pull us back, and instead of making a complete U-turn, we slowly started to spin, and rotate taking the path of least resistance.

this is the same for planets, ad the whole universe rotates slowly. planets rotate around their mass of gravity (Aka the Star in the middle of the system) The nova the planets where created in, pushes them outwards... then the gravity from the newly condensed star pulls them back in, causing them to go into an orbit, rotating with the spin.

heres something else interesting. particles also spin, such as elecrons protons and neutrons, possibly photons neutrinos and other particles as well. when temperatures approach absolute zero their spin slows, then speeds back up as they heat up.

this isnt exactly related, i just find these similarities fascinating. spinning planets revolve around spinning stars which revolve around spinning galactic centers (in spiral galaxies). spinning elecrons revolve around neucleuses with spinning protons and neutrons in them.

i am in the process of composing an arguement versus the existance of darkmatter. i will pm you for your imput of course.

Thanks for explaining the most elementary scientific principles to us.

Say, could you perhaps tell us why we don't fall off the planet?

Cause some dude wrote some shit called the Law Of Gavity, and as we all know, you cant break the laws...

fuck off kid.

How can you argue its exsistance? If not for dark matter, how could you explain the re-acceleration of the Universe in expansion?

I'm older than you, and most likely significantly better educated.

Don't act smart if you aren't.

though i cant name any offhand there ARE planets that do not rotate. Yes, they orbit a parent star, but are in what's called Gravitational locking, and the same face of the planet is ALWAYS facing the sun.

Earth's MOON is in this type of orbit. Every single fucking time you stare up at the moon you're looking at the same face.

Don't be an asshole, especially when you're wrong.
