Correct, as far as the .999~ = 1 part; the logic isn't correct at all. X]

Logics fine. If you fault that logic, then you fault the 1/3*3=.999=1 argument too.

Better proof is
x=.999...
10x=9.99999...
-x -x
9x=9
x=1
.9999=1

Yeah they are equal, but theoretically the identity is what causes the equation since if they would be considered two different values, you'd have to cancel infinity each time you calculate an equation, which would be a pain in the ass.

Which is why the identity was invented, however there are some interesting characteristics about the identity if you nit pick it and throw in some logic.

Many real-world applications consider .999 unequal to one. If you were to assume .999 = 1 then many web servers would have more downtime and mission critical applications would not by very reliable.

.999999 repeating is INFINITELY close to 1, but it isn't 1.

1/3*3=3/3

Not 0.999...

e- unless you like this stupid equal identity shit

i don't

I have to agree to get somewhere on this forum don't I, hair splitter? Can you honestly fuck off and go to the relativity thread where I slammed it in its place. Notice my post the last bit:

I still believe there are some mathematical relationships which illustrate that intuition tells us that the values are DIFFERENT, and there exists some CHARACTERISTICS which could suggest that there is a difference between the values, yet the identity bypasses those ignorable characteristics, much like ignoring air resistance in classical physics.

Heeey check it:

1/3*3=3/3

3/3=1

1/3= 0.3333

.3333*3=.99999

Therefore

1=0.9999
