does this happen because metals all have delocalized electrons and basically are ordered nuclei surrounded by swarms of electrons? Thats the only probably reason I can think of.

that's when a space elevator would become semi-profitable. We could cut out all welding industries by mass shipping stuff into space and fusing it there.
