"Flash cards" are probably the most helpful tool for this situation. The names of elements and their symbols are not the kind of things that you would want to be remembering via a mnemonic device, you need to actually know them like second nature if you have any interest in a technical field after high school.

Have you seen Billy Madison? Well if you have then I suggest you emulate his methods of studying. (Get a hot girl or me over to your house to ask you questions, and for every one you get correct I remove a piece of clothing.)
