Will we someday be able to capture and redirect consciousness into a virtual reality say for example like Sword Art Online (anime). Are people working on technologies like this and if so have they made any breakthrough in technology for it?

The way in which VR works on your mind is in a sense a capturing of your consciousness, that's why some people feel nauseous after using it. I think that once people start to use it for prolonged periods of time as they do with current PC gaming, they will eventually lose sense of reality, particularly if they can be sustained without having to get up to eat or excrete.

VR is just a screen you put in front of your eyes and it tracks your head movement. The technology has been around for decades. Its the same exact technology in smartphones. There is currently nothing special about it that i've seen. It has no interaction with your consciousness besides giving you something to look at.

They are working on mapping human consciousness, I was watching an astrophysicist talk the other day that we will be able to upload consciousness in 30 years, i've also heard estimates around 100 years, but it might never happen too. They said in the 60s we'd all be using flying cars by now and I really don't see that happening anytime soon. Ya so don't count on living forever. If they ever figure out how to do it, it'll probably be 100 trillion dollars.

I've never tried any of these VR headsets. Anyone know of some stores (US) that has kiosks with them or something? No way in hell I would spend $600 - $800 on a pair without at the very least trying them.
