http://www.technologyreview.com/news/545596/zika-virus-could-stir-demand-for-gm-mosquitoes/

Basically due to rising concerns of mosquito vector illnesses, this idea has been thrown out there as a countermeasure. The most recent concern is increasing incidence of the Zika virus:

Studies regarding their impact still being performed but this is a widely referenced article:
http://www.nature.com/news/2010/100721/full/466432a.html

Feds stance on the issue currently still undecided and they are allegedly performing their own inquiry

Your thoughts on the issue? Some of these viruses are a serious problem, with minimal prevention mechanisms available. We discussed here price inflation with certain anti-malarial medications and this would be a route which may decrease the need for that (the specific med at least) in the long term. I self admittedly don't know much about the positive aspects a mosquito might bring but my initial reaction is wiping out 90% of them doesn't sound like a bad thing.

Solution to mosquito problem

Give humans a shot of something in the blood that kills mosquito's

Mosquito takes blood and dies

Humans win

1. humans would still get viruses like malaria and ziki.

2. the death of mosquitoes in large numbers isn't the end goal, that could cause an unsafe shift in some ecosystems.

if we remove mosquito populations the entire ecosystem in that area could die. as in all plants and animals, including humans. Some areas bats feed almost entirely on mosquitoes and those same bats fuel the local agriculture with their droppings. Thats one of the ways that ebola was spread, through bat guano. Removing mosquitoes could put those entire populations at risk.

if however you're trolling thats cool.

The 3rd link in op goes into their actual impact on the ecosystem. It is worth a read I learned from it
