couldn't they reroute some energy to create a sort of heat shield to repel space dust? edit: maybe a static electric field would be more effective, or maybe even powerful magnets.
another problem would be communication. it would be impossible to communicate with the ship, although i guess the ship could send data back, albeit very slowly.
and as for slowing down... that puzzles me. Perhaps gravitational fields could be used to steer the ship into an orbit where it can gradually slow down?
Im no physicist, but the implications of E=MC2 when dealing with a huge mass and near critical acceleration could cause some unforeseeable problems.
