And here's something cool... if other sentient beings can see, they will almost certainly be able to see in a different range of the electromagnetic spectrum than we can. We can see in the 400nm to 700nm range because that is the most intense part of the EM spectrum for our Sun. We see in this range because evolution selected beings which could see best in the most intense region of our star's spectrum.
If sentient beings evolve on a cooler star (whose planet is closer to their sun to maintain liquid water) then their vision will be in smaller wavelengths, so they will be able to see in the infrared or below. If they evolve on a hotter star, they will see in the ultraviolet.
