Why not moving water? Where did the term "running water" come from?

my random guess: Probably native american culture

A natural river moves swiftly across the country in the same way that animals/humans run across the land.
Makes sense for native americans to have called lakes "running water" in contract with the stagnant water of lakes/ponds.

Then when it was technologized, they just carried the slang over

Nose doesnt make sense, feet usually smell bad, but they dont smell.

Running is defined as ongoing over a period of time. What's the problem here again?
