earth is not blocking anything.
And no light, or not enough light bounces off the earth to see the moon during new moon when the moon is between the earth and the sun.
I mean when we see the night and day of the moon, can we actually see the night
When the moon enters its phases (new/cresent/half/ect) the earth is between it and the sun blocking direct sunlight to make the celecstial phenominom occur.
When the moon is between the directly earth and sun you have whats known as a "solar eclipse"
When the earth is "directly" between the sun and moon you have whats known as a "lunar eclipse"
As for being able to see the rest of the moon even though it's not illuminated by direct sunlight: Your not tripping or filling in the blanks with your mind, you can see it
