Could someone explain it to me some way I can understand?

Thanks!

Tiny strings make up everything in the universe.

If you can't even look it up, you probably aren't intelligent enough to understand it. The world's most famous scientists struggle with things like string theory and quantum physics. Don't expect to understand it by simply asking for an explanation, since it will never be complete.

Unless of course you, son, are the ultimate reincarnation of einstein mixed with nikola tesla....THEN, perheps, you could understand this theory.

If you arent the above statement, then if you even goggle this and go to the first page your mind will slowly deteriorate and brain ooze will come from any orifaces that are in your skull.

Good luck with that.

Okay, heres string theory in a nutshell (very simplified) -- basically we have einstein's general relativity, and quantum mechanics, both which explain phenomena in this universe. The one hitch is that general relativity only accounts for large scale objects and quantum mechanics only deals with microscopic objects, so scientists have been looking for a way to combine the two theories.

String theory's most basic underlying assumption is that all objects in this universe when broken down -- are not points, but STRINGS. So basically instead of describing everything as a collection of dots, they're a collection of strings. Now with this assumption, we can make a lot of extrapolations which i won't go into -- but the problem with string theory is that scientists need to keep adding more and more "branes" and "dimensions" just to make it work, so theres a lot of doubt as to the theory's validity.

Thanks. At least I know what the theory tries =)

To the other guys, I wasn't trying to understand everything about it, or how did the scientists reach any conclusion about it, just general information, which BovineDesi provided.
I did look it up, but I understood nothing of what I saw.

So, it's very nice that everything, when broken down, are strings, but what is the use of that? I mean, what can the human beings, for example, get or achieve from everything being strings?

Well thats the hard part that you didn't understand while you read lol, but basically gauge theory, super symmetry and gravitation become a fundamental base to uphold the string theory -- not just additives that scientists have to fit into the theory SOMEHOW.

So this is solidly supported by other theories...nice. At least super symmetry is likely to be proven with the Hadron Collider, if not I guess it doesn't disprove string theory.

I have no idea what gauge theory is tho.
