I mostly yawn when I get up early in the morning (like when I'm still half asleep). I quite often yawn at night when I'm tired too. I'm not quite sure if it's down to tiredness in the morning though. I voted for the second option anyway.

Do I think yawning is contagious? Yes. I don't really yawn much when other people do, but pretty much everyone I know yawns when I, or someone else, does.

What do I think yawning is? I've never really looked it into so I'm too sure. I would guess that it's just a sign to show other people that you're tired/whatever, just like crying is a sign to show that you're hurt/upset/etc (I think). I'm probably completely wrong though. tongue.gif

Hypothesized causes of yawning:

The deep inhalation during a yawn is a means of preventing alveolar collapse.
The deep inhalation while yawning stretches type II alveolar pneumocytes, which release the surfactant dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) into the layer of fluid on the alveolar surface.
A means of cooling the brain.
An action used as an unconscious communication of psychological decompression and stress after a state of high alert.
An excess of carbon dioxide and lack of oxygen in the blood.
A way of displaying (or indicative of) apathy.
Tiredness.
A means of equalizing middle ear pressure, which can be triggered by another's yawning.
Need of food or hunger/ appetite due to reduced level of glucose supplied to the brain.
A state of boredom.
To cool the body after repeated exercise
High hormones
To possibly help moisten and lubricate the sclera and cornea of the eye, or stimulate the tear ducts, under certain circumstances.
To relieve stress

then again, if other speices it could mean a way of showing dominace (showing ones teeth) or such as snakes (realigning their jaws) etc.

it's hard to say an exact reason

Yeah I know. That's why I'm giving an easy research on it.
And thanks for this, although I already knew it tongue.gif
