a pilot of an aircraft knows that the vehicle in landing configuration will glide 2.0x10^1 km from a height of 2.0x10^3meters. a tv transmitting tower is located in a direct line with the local runway. if the pilot glides over the tower with 3.0x10^1 meters to spare and touches down on the runway at the point 6.5km from the base of the tower, how high is the tower?

First, convert to meters. The plane will descend 2000m and travel 20000m while doing so. The tower is 6500m away from where the plane will touch down. Since you know the lengths of the 2 sides of a right triangle, you know the angle of descent is 5.71 degrees. Now you know that from the 5.71 degree angle, at 6500m the height of the plane will be the height of the tower + 30m. Plug in your 5.71 degree angle and you'll see the height is 649.93m. Subtract the 30m of tower clearance and the tower is 619.93m.

Convert to meters?

It's already in meters.

inb4 argument neglecting prefixes in the SI system.

most likely they will want the answer in the original form that they gave the question in. so convert that shit back.

and ya its pretty simple. just gotta apply a few basics.

I know what you mean, but any teacher that pulls you up for leaving it in either km or m is a moron, because they're the same unit.
