Assuming that you installed correctly
Begin with the main menu screen. You can access this correct? Put all possible settings to the minimum & see if it allow's you to run. If not then proceed below...

Before you begin any real troubleshooting please make sure you have the most recent Games for Windows – LIVE version installed. As of March 2008 the most recent version is December 2007 version and it can be downloaded from: http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Support/live/Pages/default.aspx

The above is most likely your problem... assuming ofc that you do meet the minimal requirements to run the game.
- OS: Windows Vista or Windows XP
- Processor: 2.4+ GHz Intel; 2.0+ Ghz AMD
- RAM: 1 GB
- Hard Drive: 12 GB free hard drive space
- Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600+, ATI X700+
- Online Multi-player: Broadband Internet Connection, Games for Windows - LIVE

i dont know why.

i installed it fine but when i try to try to run it, a box comes up and says "windows has stopped this program from working" and then it shuts off.

when i go into the main folder and bring a shortcut of the .exe to my desktop, it tells me to insert the correct disk and restart.

it only came with 1 disc.

any suggestions?

With this error.
There are actually two unique errors that use this same text. The first error has a red “X” icon and the second version of the error has a yellow exclamation point ("!"). In a nutshell: for some reason Gears cannot find your DVD (or the completely wrong DVD is in the drive) or has found a DVD that doesn't look like it is the right Gears of War disc.

This has most often been linked to an incompatibly between Gears of War and some virtual drive programs that could be running. A virtual drive program allows the user to use a portion of hard drive space to emulate a different drive or type of drive.
