You shouldnt have to pick. Do both.

40 points for Nova-mastery, rest into cold skill of your choice

I'd use spirit on everything except a cold sorc, in which case I'd have the insight merc, would then max tk+blizz and run gerkes and ES (with sol's in the armor and hat)

My favorite. (20 nova and mastery rest fireball stuff!)

I would pass it up if I didnt have infinnity, going with the traditional meteorb or blizz-baaler. With Infinn however, Fireball nova is awesome. In small p1-3 games it clears faster. Its super spammable and more controllable focused damage. The fire is just awesome and nova does the trick on immunes.

I went fire facets and skillers on her. You could mix and match that up. The nova doesnt get much better with a light setup, while fire takes a big hit.

See that's with skillers and facets and stuff. if i were to just go with my gear i would barely do around 1k nova and 5k fireball max which i dont think would be very efficient?

sounds to me like making one of the spec's listed in the guide I posted above would be ideal for you. Without some of the other extra fixings to round the build off, I'd suggest going with 63fcr blizz sorc with gerkes.

Sol runes in your hat and armor, max tk, rest in blizz stuff. Get ~1100 life, and pop the rest in energy. Make sure you use an insight merc. This sorc is a great Tank, hc friendly and works for mf'ing/key running.
Es will make you immortal if you play reasonably careful with the extra pdr/mdr. Not even mana burn will break that es most of the time. If it does go down, your still a tal sorc with great res who has a good deal of damage reduction and reasonable life.
