Sharing is caring, here's my take on the popular cookie cutter builds, the hammerdin and Zealot. Combined ! A mini guide

Lately I've noticed alot of interest in having a melee focused hammerdin who excel's in both melee combat and battle hammer casting skills.  I believe I've found a balance that's simply assembled so it doesn't need crazy swap ups to preform optimally. Here's the char that I used much of 1.12 for mf'ing and as a general do it all build for hc.

Here's some quick things I like about this char vs a pure zealot/smiter , or a standard hammerdin.


Vs a pure hammer, This build destroys bosses and magic immunes much faster.
Vs a Pure Zealot ,  This build has potent aoe power making it faster in some instances for area clearing or against Pi's.

Versatility ,  I can play as both of the former builds at the same time on one setup without much loss in either build.

Speed, Sometimes its faster to Zeal then hammer, other times it's quicker to cast instead of hit.

This build gets full powered hammers while tele-porting, no hotkey delay while you switch from tele to conc. This one just hammers! (can have any aura on with full hammer damage woot!@)

Looks. Its my opinion that if your a paladin , this game came with a class specific weps and shields, you should use them to fill your destined roll in this game. Astrons is the elite caddy of win. Large hammer > dagger or wimpy flail.

Cons

doh, yeah it does has some. It losses some top end damage vs the pure build of either.
It has a harder time with res and it loses a little gross life because you'll have to stat str a little higher for elite shield smite duties.
Not item friendly. Rather specific combo of items to pull this char off.
The merc isnt quite as powerful as a stand alone pwner. Pride as a beat stick for itself just doesnt quite stack up quite as well vs Eth reapers, eth infinnity (the mercs I'd be using  on the pure zeal, or pure hammer.)

This build works because it takes advantage of the free level 20 conc on the merc's pride to obtain its hammer damage so it can work on beefing up the melee section. It's somewhat merc Dependant.






Character goals and Item + Skill selection.





Character Goals For Hell-thy play.


75% faster cast rate for hammers
4fpa Zeal, 6fpa Smite for melee
50% min crushing blow, deadly strike
86 or 48 fhr. I elected for the 48
ability to stack -120 res for uber meph's conviction. Treachery buff (mercs armor) + res gear Salvation (kiras or fort.)

With max fant, Zeal needs 39 ias for max speed.
With max fanat, Smite needs 34 ias for  max speed

Source of cbf
Max res or close to it.
Lightning sorb (cuz souls arent joking around)
Max block.
This build has 73%-100% crushing blow and 50%-65% deadly strike.

Hat
believe it or not, this spot is flexible. Here's a few common options with +/- to them. Whatever hat you use, remember that it requires at least 15% ias.

Gface -The best zeal and smite option. This will bring you from 73% crushing blow to 100%, and 50% deadly strike to 65% DS.
I think this trades off to much skill and defensive mods to use this, but it's undeniably a solid choice. (budget pick)

Coa - Two sockets, 1 skill, you all know this hat. Personally I think this hat doesnt quite live up to its worth in pvm with the heavy str req's. It's get the job done however, and two sockets make this flexible. (-1337 fg choice)

Szacko- yeah what hammer could pass up the cow-bag sack. life, skills, gobs of mana and life, mf.  This is what I use on mine. (rounded choice)

Kiras's  - huge res, cbf, it has it going on.  (candidate)


Armor
Enigma, tele is excellent. No need to reiterate this item's merits.

Fort - 300% damage for zeal, and fcr for hammers. This is what I'd suggest you use in ubers to pick up res and lost fcr from swapping trangs with dracs.

Coh/Smoke/Vipermagi/Pru/etc....


Shield

Spirit in an elite high res base. I used a Zak, you ought to use Sacred Targe. Any of the elites work. This build requires 35fcr here.

Hoz - This can only be used full time providing you swap your hat for griff's and pop on 1 fcr ring. Not worth the trade imo, I do keep this shield on switch. Spirit for main play, spirit for bo , hoz for having a shield holder on switch and for +4 on holyshield. Up'd uber option too.


Wep
Astron's. Caddy, duh its named after it.
+4 means you get huge skills for hammers
it has 58% crushing blow ber'd , pwning the crap out of lastwish
up to +85 damage.  This makes it compete with grief given the cb for kill speed without losing +4 skills. While the lcs doesnt display this damage properly, it's roughly 1/3 of your total damage for zeal, double for smite.

With this build, I feel it beats grief out because of the higher hammer dam and crushing blow. Grief means a loss of ~+6 combat skills pretty much.


Gloves
something with fcr
Trang gloves, or magefists. I like trangs for the res.


Jewelry
Highlords for the +1, deadly strike and ias.
Ravenfrost, our source of cbf. <3
Wisp ring - More mf, and the all important source of light sorb. It has handy oak charges too.

Belt
Arach's , fcr slot.

Boots
Gores or Goblin toes.
Melee mod kings.

I feel gores are best on this char for general pvm as with trang gloves on it provides your source of OW. In ubers, you'd have dracs for this need, so if you wanted to hassle with swapping, Goblin toes are better here. Not worth it imo when you have 73% cb already.

Might Merc , Pride . Pair with treachery (or coh)  and Andy's mask/COT/TALS/Gaze  (something with leach)




What Skillz have you learned today?

20 Battle Hammer
20 Vigor
20 Blessed Aim
20 Fanat
10 Sac* (syngery for Zeal)
5 Zeal (Attack rating and some additional damage)
1 redemption , salvation
1 holyshield*

Feel Free to mix and match your sac/zeal holyshield mix based on your Play-style preference, and AR needs .  More to holy shield for smite..etc

For general pvm, zeal is better everywhere. It's faster, hits harder and multi-targets. For end bosses you'll usually want to smite instead, at least until they're slivered and switch back to zeal.

Mighty interesting build, and fair play for taking the time to work it out! I always knew it was possible, but never really cared to try it.

Have you been able to make a 3 element sorc yet? ^_^

I think I might try this also. I got an Auradin who got boring real quick so Ill use him as I dont want to mess up my zealer. I have all the gear except Ill have to zod my eth Astrons and Im pretty sure I have a 35fcr ST somewhere.

I might have somehow missed this but what are you using in the off hand?

Are those GC's mainly PCombs, or are you also using AR/Life for Zeal?

yes, 7 pcombats are in use for these screenies. Under them lie 20/5's with the 8th pcombat slot taking up with these sc's for res. I always keep the cube in my stash, and under that lie my torch and tomb.

Actually I have. Using the tal set. Firewall, orb and Nova. You can also make a pretty decent tri sorc if your using dream for the melee light damage (20 points LM) saving you ~80 points to split elsewhere. Not an easy feat though. I've always wanted to try doing a tri sorc with Mang song, Ormus (or vmagi) and griff's for the huge skill bosts.

I thought we had this discussion once already but I guess you cant remember something as far back as a week ago but here you go again..., if you dont like pvm, dont play it. If you click on a pvm guide its not going to do it for you.


pvm and pvp play arent mutually exclusive, I play both on several different realms. If you want to keep being lame about pvm, then come play where I play. On hardcore. If you want to duel (ive a 32) then I'd be happy to show you what this pvm'er is capable of. (hardcore ladder east)

Ok, so its been pointed out I typo'd on Blessed hammer (battle). Since battle hammers sound far more badass, I'm keeping the term.


With respect to just using conc myself and running a faith merc , you'll gain some hammer damage for sure, but your tradding off ~ 500 or more ed% for zeal (not to mention ar too) and smite, plus the merc wont hit as hard itself.
Since it has over 9K hammer damage with conc via the merc, I consider magic damage and hammers good to go. The balance is keeping the melee skills potent.

gj :) but here is a tip use tmc, if you do so you can use less fcr items
and this build is viable for pvp
