Welcome to my Aura Sorc guide. Its really a Double Nova Thunderstorm Aura Sorc, but that's a mouthful isn't it.

Intro

This is an off-meta pvm character and does not have super fast clear speed in comparison to S tier builds but performs well in players 1-3. The goal of this character is to maximize holy shock aura and survivability, which is mana in this case. The lazy or passive nature of this build fits perfectly with thunderstorm and chance to cast nova when struck. These unique elements also make the chase of finding items much more interesting and rewarding. The build allows a lot of flexibility on how you set it up, mainly through using more or less ctc nova proc items. The more ctc nova proc items you use, the less mana and thunderstorm / holy shock damage you'll have. So, its all about finding a balance, there's a time and place for all the setups but it also depends on the playstyle you prefer.

I believe this is the best possible Aura Sorc while staying true to the theme. Of course you could make it more of a caster but thats not the point of the character. My gg build with images is at the bottom.

You can play this pvp but its boring and a tgods pretty much instantly shuts it down. Sometimes fun to hop in a pub and catch people off guard but thats about it. This is not a pvp guide.

Playstyle & Build Features

This build is all about being lazy, cast a few statics here or there, teleport into a crowd, wait a few seconds and move to the next pack. Because static is maxed it has a massive radius and hits off-screen, while not necessary it does help speed things up significantly. Holy shock now does double damage in melee range so its to you're benefit to be close to monsters. For that reason, we need to make sure we have as much health as possible, or in this case mana as the build runs 95 es.

Now to explain the piece de resistance, chance to cast nova when struck. Builds that stack this stat are often called "double nova" and used on a traditional nova sorc. A recent change that made this possible is when they fixed the next hit delay bug, which means you can hit and damage with nova and its procs as often as possible. You can stack this stat as high as 112% when struck or every time you get hit a nova procs. My build will run anywhere between 28% and 84% depending on how you set it up. This also lends to being close to monsters, getting hit, and in turn being as tanky as possible.

Each proc does on avg 1.1k dmg and in a high density area you can be attacked up to 10 times in a second, imagine each time that happened all monsters nearby took 1k dmg. This combined with the holy shock pulses, thunderstorm strikes, and statics make this, in my opinion, the ultimate passive build in the game. It's almost like a lightning thorns build in a way. Of course casting static isnt exactly fully passive but you dont need to use it too often and it works perfectly fine without as well.

Here is a video by MacroBioBoi explaining how double nova works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mitJxV5LHBk&t=174s

Skills and Stats

This build is complete at level 95 and skills and stats are very straight forward. With my setup it hits lvl 40 es exactly at maxed.

Enough strength to wear gear, which can easily be 0
No dexterity
No vitality
Rest into energy

1 Warmth
20 Static Field
20 Thunderstorm
20 Lightning Mastery
20 Telekinesis
20 Energy Shield

Gear Choices

Helm: Dream (diadem for style)
Shield: Dream (low str base, large/kite/tower shield)
Weapon: Thunderstorm / Lightning Mastery Orb (+mana, fcr and 2 sockets are desired but not necessary, fill with guardian thunder and light facet)
Armor: Jewelers of Nova Shield (fill with light facets)
Gloves: Caster Crafts or Frostburns (Blood crafts are also a reasonable choice for gloves)
Rings: Caster Crafts or Sojs (Blood crafts are more realistic here since no one crafts caster rings, mine are blood crafts)
Amulet: Caster Craft (Minimum of 17 faster cast rate)
Belt: Caster Craft or Arach
Boots: Caster Crafts
Swap: Cta and Lidless

9x Life/Mana Small Charms
7x Lightning Lifers
Renewed Crack: -ELR, Mana, Att or FHR (if you need to hit a bp)
Torch
Anni
Cube

All crafted items except amulet need to have 14% chance to cast level 5 nova when struck except amulet which cant roll the stat. The next most important stat is increased mana followed by lightning resistance to cover the sunder. After that its really up to you but the usual suspects work like strength, life, all resistances and poison resistance etc.

Expected break points are:

60 FHR (Can be met with perfect dreams, if not boots or sunder to cover the rest)
37 or 63 FCR (63 FCR needs an orb with 20fcr)

Prebuffing es and ts is obviously possible with this build and can allow you to almost fully max another skill like warmth or nova. For me though, the build is all about being lazy, so I do not prebuff at all. I do keep a thunderstorm prebuff kit in stash which includes a thunderstorm ormus, 3 lightning skills amulet and 3 lightning skills circlet, but I never use them.

Basically you're trying to craft caster gear with +14% nova, +mana and +lightning resistance. Cover your -70 sunder then you can start considering other stats and rolls.

Merc

I've toyed with using thorns, both from bramble and the mercs native aura. Giving up the survivability of prayer just isn't worth it for me and Coh is simply a better choice than bramble. So it really just comes down to infinity vs insight. I very rarely use insight, but its fun to keep around if you want to do a max mana full tank setup.

Prayer Merc
Infinity / Insight
Cure
Coh

Damage and Stats

As I mentioned in the intro, changing your chance to cast nova % will directly effect your damage and mana pool but all setups work, its a matter of preference. Getting the 63 FCR breakpoint is only possible with at least 1 crafted ring and FCR on orb.

84% ctc nova: All crafted items
70% ctc nova: 1 Soj
56% ctc nova: 1 Soj + Arach
42% ctc nova: 2 Soj + Arach
28% ctc nova: 2 Soj + Arach + Frostburns

Least damage and mana at 84%
Highest damage is 42% and lower.
Max mana is possible at 28%.

I typically play at 42%, but sometimes use 56% or 84% too. Its fun to have a super high ctc nova when player weaker TZs like flayer jungle or when terrorizing full acts.

Exact stats depends on setup but these are the ranges. Damage stats are the average per strike or pulse etc. Holy Shock is double damage in melee range remember. All damage stats are from the d2planner using my gear as listed below including infinity equipped on merc providing conviction aura. Sheet value damage would be less on thunderstorm for example, more around 7-9k range.

Life 1.4 -1.6k
Mana 3.5k - 4.6k
Thunderstorm 14.5k - 16.5k
Holy Shock 3.6k - 3.8k
Ctc Nova 1k - 1.1k

Poison Res 10
Cold Res 10
Fire Res 10
Lightning Res 9

Stash

Just a few things I keep in stash or items that aren't in the images below:

Extra matching 20/17 and 40 lifer
Jewelers Great Helm of Nova Shield with 3 light facets
Jewelers Tower Shield of Nova Shield with 3 light facets
120 arach
Perf frostburns
2x matching soj
Crescent moon war sword
Various caster craft boots with 14%nova (poison res pair and lightning res pair)
+3 lightning skills amulet
+3 lightning skills 20 fcr circlet 2 socketed with light facets
Lidless wall socketed with light facet

Conclusion

While Aura Sorcs are not anything new, I believe this is the definitive guide and the best possible Aura Sorc. The new changes in D2r such as the increased aura damage up close and NHD bug fix have opened the build to new heights. And while all builds in rotw improved I believe it’s these off meta type builds that benefit most.

This is the ultimate lazy character, very stylish with the all blue, and presents a unique and rewarding item chase. Combining all the aspects of this build makes it a nice off meta option that performs well, will impress your friends, and takes advantage of unique game mechanics and underutilized skills.

There is something extremely satisfying about everything dying around you and seeing 10 novas pop in extreme succession just from standing there. Don’t sleep on this build and start collecting your own 14% nova gear. Most people have a nova sorc already and it doesn’t take much to switch over to an Aura Sorc.

Thank you for taking the time to read my guide.
