Are these calculated separately? Can I stack 70 dr to mitigate the -phys res? Or is 50 DR a hard cap with phys res being a separate calculation?

Can anyone shed some light on how this works in PvP?

You can stack it.
If you have 20 dr over 50, then it will neglect the first -20dr and allow you to stay at max 50
