In this link it shows that the auradin also puts dragon on the merc.

How does this work? Do auras on equip stack hits?

aura stacking works the same on mercs, they just dont have a holy fire synergy to boost the damage
i would recommend you use a merc with insight since charging everywhere costs a lot of mana. alternatively you can use things like frw charms and rely less on charge and mana pots

I'm thinking the holy fire aura from all sources adds together into a single hit.

Based on old d2 zonfire99 where you would put a ton of the same aura on charms and gear, but if you put different offensive auras they cancel out.

your equipped stack and your mercs equipped stack
you have a holy fire aura and your merc has a holy fire aura
yours and your merc do not stack

Merc aura stacking is history. These days its pretty much only to look cool
