Is there a trick to this? The RNG sometimes is really good, like 900+k a run, other times its' shit for an hour getting 400-500k per run

Just plain old RNG.
Depending on how often it comes up with the kill and the item find.

Sometimes you get less than 400k too or if you’re lucky u get 1mil+ that’s rng for you
