Well grief does most damage that has been beaten to death. I typically use a last wish as complete overkill to keep merc alive with grief.

Foh damage will mostly come from holy bolt, unless this is a pvp build. If your playing a foh/smite variation which I prefer for full game potential clearing (ubers) then maybe a lawbringer/grief combo would work better.

As buddy mentioned before, a2>a5 for QoL on merc.


TLDR

A5 merc

grief/grief - damage

Grief/last wish - my personal favorite (decent damage great survivability

Grief/lawbringer - damage + decrypt + slain monsters rip + sanctuary

Then there's budget

Lawbringer / lightsaber
Lawbringer / Cresent moon

Full sazabi + headstriker

And Plague:-)

Yup, Sazabi works very well!

I use fanaticism with 20 hard points, and an act 5 merc with plague and last wish. You could switch LW for grief.
Not the most typical setup but I was bored of act 2 for every char, this one wrecks everything solo with the 30+ fanaticism aura the FoHdin provides.
