Im gonna try a travi Zerk barb with act 5 merc.

What are the best gear options? Death? Grief? of something else? Forti for armor or ...?

boy just use an insight a2 merc. a trav zerker pretty much kills everything before the merc gets any hits in, so might as well improve your qol instead
