This is interesting, because pierce is the strength of cold sorcs. Unless the other player is overstacking your pierce regardless, then the higher display damage on fathom setup is only marginally better than the lower dmg / higher pierce setup with Obsession.
I used to play vita blizz in pubs, and most players don’t stack high enough to fully negate blizz - and I found even a 12k blizz was sufficient in most cases. Obviously vs good players you’d want up to 16-18k blizz, but at the cost of survivability. Would love to test these out in 2.4 and see if the extra pierce helps to make it a viable option even on blizz, which I had always assumed would not be the case since fathom is so OP for cold sorcs.
You could go both assuming you've got the many thousands of fg to do so. If you can gear a Cold Sorc to have 0 str in both instances, have an Obsession Vita set up on swap (which will cost a lot), and a half decent Jewelers (which will also cost a lot). You'd still need +str on jewelry. Since this is all theorycraft, there's no telling how feasible or practical it is for all the trouble. Any normal person would probably have only just enough to go one vs the other.
