You use it as a utility skill if you are V/T. If you are not, you should probably be setup in such a way that you can use it for damage.

If you're V/T, acquiring AR means sacrificing FoH damage, which is a waste. If you aren't VT, you can stack AR up without loss, as well as maxing charge, which makes it hit harder than smite.

Either way, it's still extremely important defensively, as well as being useful to set up for smite.

Please stop with your "highlord smiters, etc", highlords sucks ass, greif does not put out enough attack rating to charge any decent defence-buffing opponet(like chilling armor,defence shrines,shout,defiance,etc).Why not then make a pure 1 hand charger,or dump points in Might or Blessed aim w/1 pt fanat?Thats the kid of logic you have, my friend. Even with chanting before duels,wearing 2 ravens still only gives 8k Attack Rating. Maras>any pala ammy, gg dying in 1 fb, or having to fade/use salvation every time with your shitty highlords.
