Saying "rofl" to me when I say something about melee shows that he's completely clueless about melee and highly doubt he even has one. But yes for the most part lower ar setups usually have high damage with high ds so usually just it hits less for more damage. It's also not just about ar though. If I was using a visionary setup with 25k ar and was dueling someone who had valor setup on I would switch to shako setup which has 3k less ar and I would do much better than if I hadn't switched.
I don't want to start a theorycrafting discussion, but the way ar works is tricky.
If you switch from a visionary to a shako you get more life, +2 all attributes, +2 skills, etc. etc. (I'm assuming you were using a non-circlet visionary?)
As the thread alphasquare posted says, the difference between 17k and 23k is about 5%, which isn't much, and why you stand correct when you say that sometimes lower-ar set-ups do better and may seem to "hit more," because that 5% is barely noticeable when zealots kill each other in only a few volleys.
