In certain situations yeah it's best.

I used clay in a lot of matchups too, especially if I knew they werent going to die to the pulse and weren't dumb enough to die to the explosion

fire golem works ok in LLD if they're dumb and want to hit it. in HLD i never bothered with it. Teeth can last hit just as well and can hit them off screen. he claimed slow on clay golem was useless in pvp, i just tuned him out after that lol

Most hld builds have 0 mdr so the fire golem is viable.

Besides, you can always duel with clay golem until they're at 1 hp then cast a fire golem

And yeah, you only have a second or two to kill them with either skill before rep life puts them out of kill range so there's no reason not to use both

fire golem is one of the worst ways to finish someone at 1 hp. namelock firewall from 3 piece trangs is one of the best
you can pretty quickly figure out whether fire golem is actually going to hit people or not, and switch to the more practical gay golem after that. 95% of people its going to be useless. Like you notice, any regen at all and people will not die to hit once the poison wears off which is only a ~3.9 second window during which golem will only pulse a single time. But its not just that. Even 1 point of MDR of any piece of equipment negates it. Cyclone armor negates it. I think ES actually makes it round to 0 even without any MDR. Fire absorb negates it.

now there are a few builds that will be uniquely vulnerable to fire golem since they're running around with 0 regen, 0 absorb, 0 mdr, no cyclone/es. Non-hoto builds without rares/crafts, dungos, string, exile, angelics, regen boots, trangs, tals, viper, white, dwarf or phoenix. And those builds indeed may be vulnerable to dying at 1 hp to holy fire from fire golem. You might be able to probe with your golem for a single pulse to test it out, and then exploit that to your advantage. Just don't expect it to work on most chars.

namelock firewall on the other hand is pretty much instant death to anything but rising sun. Just overlapping a trangs firewall with some incidental +skills for ~10 frames with 75% fire resist will deal ~40-50 hp in damage

another issue is that even if fire golem could kill some people, there are matchups like bvc where they're dead at 1 hp no matter what, and fire golem is not a practical means to kill them before they akara (gotta plug namelock firewall, again, since its great at that)
if a barb is at 1hp, he'll die to any incidental attacker takes damage like on stormshield or trangs helm, and he can't get in range to hurt you without eating a poison nova. Even trying to exactly namelock wc zerk is a real hail mary for a 1 hp barb, heck a golem slapping him does it.

contrast that to some caster matchups where they can just teleport around spamming long range attacks.
