well, test it if you dont believe it. merc equipment does not change their appearance

lol and an act 2 merc holds a spear in his hand and uses jab. He can still use polearms.

They can use any sword, their gear never changes the way they look.
Act2 mercs can use non-amazon class javelins and throwing spears as well, still doesn't change the way they look.

Don't forget that you need ebotd wp on your a2 merc, cause with reapers he can't use jab, since it's a spear only-skill
