Well as I mentioned in the guide, they don't really fill a niche, unless you want to be making 75% FCR builds which I have tried and definitely do not like.  Non-Spirit Monarchs should always be MB builds, at least in my opinion.  I'm all about flexibility and survivability, so in terms of those aspects, there are much better alternatives out there.  The only build I would see a nice PNova rare/magical shield in, would be if it had Deflecting mod and you make an alternative MB build that maintains decent damage compared to non-MB builds, however, even then I think SS and even Homunculus are still a better options in general.

In short, if you don't need block, like every other casting character, Spirit is just too good to pass up.
