Don't try to force a ww hit. Trading hits with a barb is a bad idea.
Start playing trapper style from the start, only go for whirls when you think you can land an unanswered whirl hit (most likely while the barb is trying to walk out of traps or something and not in whirl and not out of hit recovery yet) and get away to safety asap. Unless you know you are at a point where you can outmuscle the barb (still probably a bad idea that could turn the duel around for the barb). If you want to get ow on the barb look for an opening but don't be too eager to attempt a whirl pass if the barb can hit back with a whirl.
this is basically what i do. but its really hard to explain in words for someone who doesnt know what you are talking about.
he needs to youtube videos of trapper or hybrid vs barbs and see how thy move to avoid getting hit and stuff. and when the barb gets locked + needs to wsg out (aka the time to stomp + ww and tele away)
