1smite/20holy shield = +20life / +6K def
20smite/1holy shield = +0.7K dmg on smite

and defense is useless vs many duelers (smiters, foh, VT, hammers, any sorc but melee, necros, traps, ele-druids, widowmaker builds...).

Obviously you have some experience in duelling with VT, so i totally trust you. Actually i skilled my VT with max HS according to your guide.

i assume grief+holy shield ~ 500

then each 15% from smite provides +75damage, where each +1 holy shield gives +4 with around 900% bonus, so +40 total.

20 levels x 35 (difference between +1 smite and +1 holy shield) = 700

against 50%dr, these 700damage would be only ~ 50
but ~ 100 vs 0%dr which can be helpfull in many situations.
