1. Locate north
2. Turn your map accordingly
3. Locate some landmarks
4. Check the map scale
5. Start moving

In beginning check map occasionally and make sure you are on right spot. Move at your own speed in terrain and correlate your pace to your map. Slowly you can start moving longer distances without constantly checking map but visualise landmarks you will see in your planned route.
